Check Their References
When you’re looking for any service provider—photographer or otherwise—it’s always a good idea to check their references. Talk to other LGBTQ+ couples who have used their services and see if they had a positive experience. If the photographer is not listed on any LGBTQ+ specific websites or directories, that’s not necessarily a red flag, but it’s something to consider. Ask the venue for their personal references, chances are they’ve done a couple same-sex weddings.
Research Their Online Presence
Nowadays, most businesses have some sort of online presence, whether it’s a website, social media accounts, or both. Also, google map listings that denote if they are a LGBTQ+ friendly business. Take some time to poke around and see what kind of vibe you get from the photographer’s online presence. Are they active on social media? What kinds of things do they post about? Do they make an effort to include diverse couples in their portfolio? These are all things that can give you some insight into whether or not the photographer is truly LGBTQ+ friendly.
Have a Conversation
Of course, the best way to gauge whether or not someone is truly supportive and friendly towards the LGBTQ+ community is to have a conversation with them. When you’re talking with potential photographers, be upfront about your needs and see what kind of response you get. Do they seem open and understanding? Or are they dismissive or judgmental? This should give you a pretty good idea as to whether or not this person is someone you want documenting your big day.
